Printing Plates – PP187
We have 4 different types of clichés :
1 Photopolymer Clichés
2 Laser Engraved
3 Ceramic
4 Steel
Printing Pads – PP188
Pads are made of silicone, fixed on a wooden or metal base plate. The pad is used as an intermediate to pick up the ink from the printing plate and transfer it to the product.
Pad Printing Inks – PP159
Today, pad printing ink is used successfully both in the field of high-quality decoration and in the field of labeling and marking.

The pad printing plate, also called cliché or the printer plate, contains the desired artwork (image). This artwork can be engraved by means of laser or chemical etching and its function is to hold ink in this etched/lasered cavity, allowing the pad to pick up this ink as a film (in the shape of the artwork), which is then transferred to the substrate. The quality of the printing plate and the print image affect the quality of the print directly.
We offer an extensive range of cliché materials and types of production now enables customers to select a cliché matched perfectly to their requirements.
AMTEC offers precision-tooled steel and ceramic plates for high-volume pad printing production.
We have 4 different types of clichés:
- Photopolymer (aka Magnet screen) Clichés
- Laser Engraved (Magnet-Aloxid)
- Ceramic
- Steel

Photopolymer clichés (or polymer clichés) are photo-engraved. The process is fairly simple and takes about 20 – 40 minutes. First, you need to have a workspace free of ambient ultraviolet (U.V.) light, because the cliché blanks are sensitive to U.V. Then, you need to have a film positive with sufficient image density.
You also need a suitable exposure unit, line screen film, and developer/tray/pad. Most polymers require two exposures; one with the film positive and a second with a line screen. Following exposures, the cliché is then developed in either an alcohol solution or distilled water. After exposure, the cliché must be re-exposed to harden the image area and dried to remove moisture.

Steel clichés are chemically etched. Due to the complexity of the process, steel clichés are typically manufactured only by pad printing equipment suppliers.
Low Chrome – 10mm thick, hardened steel with approximately 12% chrome added to inhibit oxidation. Nominal etch depth is 16-22 microns +/-4 microns. Durability is approx. 500,000 impressions.
No Chrome – 10mm thick, hardened steel. Best resolution and etch bottom consistency due to the structure of the steel. Excellent for CMYK. Durability is approx. 500,000 impressions.
Record (aka Thin Steel) – 0.5mm thick. These clichés are affixed to the print like a photopolymer or laser engraved cliché, using a magnetic base plate. Resolution is similar to low chrome steel, and durability is approx .100,000 impressions.

Laser
Aloxid clichés are laser etched. These clichés are either aluminum or steel-backed, depending on the type.
Aloxid
Available in standard aluminum backed, or optional steel-backed (for magnetic ink cup or magnetic support plate). Aloxid clichés require a YAG or Fiber laser. Aloxid clichés offer a nominal etch depth of 20 microns and durability of 10-20,000 impressions.

Ceramic Clichés
Ceramic clichés are laser etched and provide the highest level of durability available. These clichés may be etched with either a YAG or Fiber laser. Because both sides of ceramic clichés can accept an image, you can etch both sides for maximum use.
Ceramic
10mm thick, solid ceramic. Durability is 1-3 million impressions. Each ceramic cliché may be etched with 4 artworks, 2 per side.

Pads come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some of the standard shapes are :
Shape | Description | Uses |
Cone | Most common general purpose pad. | watch faces, advertising specialties, golf balls and electronic parts |
Modified Cone | Space limitations, or when multiple-up printing. | automotive components, toys and fishing lures |
Rooftop | For long straight images. | catheter tubes, rulers and plastic housings |
Modified Roof Top | For straight images when there are space limitations. | text, part numbers and confined spaces |

Hardness | Base Color | Recommended Parts |
Shore 1 | Blue | Extremely sensitive parts |
Shore 3 | Red | Sensitive parts |
Shore 6 | Green | Standard parts |
Shore 12 | White | Light textured surfaces |
Shore 18 | Black | Heavily textured surfaces |
Silicone printing pads are produced in a range of hardness (also known as Durometer), measured in terms of “shore” scale. The backing of the pad is color-coded to differentiate the hardness of the pad.

UV- inks for CMYK photo printing
UV Inks have a low share of solvents. Drying takes place by means of UV light. UV ink is available in the following ink shades: white/black, standard bright colors 02-23, CMYK, gold/silver, clear lacquer. Special ink shades can also be mixed on request. UV ink is mixed ready for use, i.e. thinner does not normally have to be added. A corresponding additive is however provided if necessary. Using UV inks saves you time-consuming and costly drying and since solvent does not evaporate from these inks, you can print with constant ink shades for longer periods which is particularly important to CMYK photo printing.
